The Educational Program at Gantner Avenue School
The Gantner Avenue
School has served the
children of Elmwood Park since 1929. It has an ethnically, racially, and
culturally diverse student body organized in a grade Kindergarten through five
model. The school is a neighborhood
school with respect for tradition and a commitment to progress.
The Gantner Avenue
School provides a
comprehensive educational experience in a safe and caring environment that
allows each and every child to realize his or her individual potential. It is our intention to educate the whole
child. The school views itself as a
community which includes students, faculty, staff, parents, grandparents, and
the people who live nearby, and community organizations such as scouting and
the recreation department.
The Gantner Avenue
School offers its
students a challenging curriculum taught by a team of elementary school
teachers and content area specialists.
Offerings include: language arts literacy, mathematics, science, social
studies, health, physical education, art, music, computer technology, English
as a second language, special education, world language, gifted and talented
and library/media. The special education
program has self contained, resource room, and modified mainstream
options. Support services such as
counseling, child study team, speech therapy, Title I, occupational therapy,
and physical therapy are available as needed.
All instruction at the Gantner Avenue School
is based upon the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. The approved revised New Jersey Core Content
Standards are being fully implemented.
Students and teachers are working hard to prepare for the New Jersey
Elementary School Assessments for third and fourth grades. The tests, required by the No Child Left Behind
Law of 2001, will determine the pupil’s knowledge of the new standards in
Language Arts Literacy, Mathematics and Science.
This year, the students of the Gantner Avenue School
are recipients of the Exxon Mobil Education Alliance (EMEA) Program $500
Grant. This grant provides Exxon and
Mobil retailers the opportunity to obtain this grant to support a local
school. This year, two million dollars
from Exxon Mobil has once again been allocated for this program. Grants were awarded on a first-come, first
serve basis; only one application was submitted from each local service
station.
This spring, the Gantner Avenue
School will focus their
efforts in the area of Biology at all K-5 levels. Students will be studying ant farms. Ant Farm Kits are ordered and will be shipped
for delivery ito begin our study.
Students and teachers were anxious for their arrival and are very
appreciative of being a recipient of this grant.
Technology is both a subject and
an educational tool at the Gantner
Avenue School. Technology is integrated into the
curriculum. Every classroom is equipped
with computers, software, internet access, cable television, video cassette
recorders, overhead projectors, and calculator sets. The library/media center houses a computer
lab. All students spend at least one
period per week in this facility.
Parents are very involved and
always welcome at the Gantner
Avenue School. Numerous formal and informal parent-teacher
conferences take place on a daily basis.
Parents serve on committees that develop, implement, and monitor the
school’s annual objectives. Field trips,
parties, dances, athletic events, and promotion ceremonies would not be
possible without parent chaperones.
The Parent-Teacher Organization
(P.T.O.) is very active at the Gantner
Avenue Elementary
School.
Fundraising by the P.T.O. finances up to six assembly programs every
year, put on by outside professionals, and many of our field trips. On an annual basis, the P.T.O. asks the
school to provide a wish list and then makes the wishes on it come true.
