Mrs. Vandermast’s Third Grade Happenings
2008 - 2009
Third Grade has
been a very busy year so far! It has been amazing to see the students’
growth since the beginning of September and it is already October. We are working hard in the areas of reading and
writing! The children are enjoying an appreciation of literature as we share
wonderful read-alouds, stories in our basal readers, and our own independent
reading experiences, such as D.E.A.R. Time. Writing is another important
component of our literacy program as we are learning to expand our thoughts and
express them clearly. Soon, we will be writing biographies of each other!
Our students are having a great time in math. We are currently studying geometry. Working
with shapes is always fun! We are practicing graphing data in various
charts, such as bar graphs, pictographs, and tally tables. Multiplication
will be an intricate part of our studies so it’s a great time to begin
practicing those facts!
The children created wonderful projects for Social Studies that enabled them to
represent various physical features such as mountains, oceans, volcanoes,
valleys, etc. They did a fantastic job!
In Science, we are studying the Solar System. We are very excited to learn about
the moon, Sun, stars, and planets. We will be learning what causes seasons,
day and night, moon phases, and much more! What an incredibly huge universe we
live in!
The children are very busy preparing to take the NJASK3 test in March. With all the hard work they’ve done so far, they’ll do a great job! There is so much more for us on the horizon. Have a great year!
