 Nursing News

Fall 2008

================================================

If your child will be out of school, please call (201) 796-8700 and select extension 2993 for the School Nurse at 16th Avenue School.

The answering machine is on 24/7 so you may call the night before or the day of your child’s absence.

To ensure all children are appropriately accounted for, please call by 9:00 AM to report an absence.

When you call your child’s absence out in the morning, if you would like their homework, please request it at that time. It is difficult to obtain homework requests when parents call after lunch time.

At this time of year we are in the height of the Cold and Flu Season. With the frequent weather changes, sometimes with a 25-30 degree difference overnight, please dress your child as warmly as possible, in different layers of clothing, so they can enjoy outdoor recess when the temperature is above freezing.

If your child is ill the night before or the morning of school, please keep your child at home to help prevent the spread of illness. Please note that giving a child aspirin or other medications prior to coming to school may mask their illness while the child is still contagious to others.

Guidelines for when to Keep Your Children Home from School

If your child exhibits any of the following symptoms he/she should be kept at home:

        -a fever over 100 degrees

        -difficulty breathing

        -fatigue or general discomfort

        -vomiting or diarrhea

        -a severe cough

        -an unusual rash

***Please keep your child home for 24 hours after they experience a fever of 100 degrees, vomiting or diarrhea.

Nutrition:

Please remember that breakfast is the most important meal of the day.  A child who is well fed and nourished is prepared to learn.

If you choose to participate in the school breakfast and lunch programs please include a personal check that is made out to "The Elmwood Park Board of Education." We do accept exact change but checks are a great way of keeping track of lunch/breakfast payments.

Lunch or breakfast forms submitted late cannot be processed and late or inadequate payment may result in your child not receiving lunch.

All parents who choose not to participate in the school lunch program should prepare a healthy nutritious lunch, such as a sandwich with fruit or juice, at home prior to coming to school.

Dropping Off Items?:

If you need to drop off any items for your child at school, an instrument, back pack or lunch, please be sure that the item is clearly labeled with your child’s name, grade and teacher, to ensure that your child receives it in a timely manner.
