Ms. Kane, Library Media-Specialist

Who gets to read to every elementary student in Elmwood Park?    ME!

Fall 2008

After several years of teaching grades 3 through 6, I earned a master's degree and an educational specialists degree in reading.  This has enabled me to teach reading skills at all age levels from kindergarten to adults.  Interested in the role of technology in education, I was excited to be part of the team that set up computer labs and taught computer skills to students and teachers in the Cherry Hill School District.  As a certified Library Media Specialist, I look forward to sharing my love of reading and my interest in technology with students and teachers in the Elmwood Park Schools.

Students in the library are celebrating the September birthday of well known author/illustrator, Tomie de Paola. A birthday banner highlights a  display of his books, which include Strega Nona, Big Anthony, The Art Lesson and his autobiographical chapter books.  Students were given bookmarks, featuring Tomie's famous characters, to color and enjoy.  Throughout the month, Tomie's stories will be read to the students.  Students were encouraged to go to the Elmwood Park Public Library to checkout additional Tomie Books.

The importance of the alphabetical arrangement of fiction and easy books on the bookshelves, according to the author's last name, is being emphasized.  Students, like the authors, are being seated in alphabetical order according to their last name.  Students will learn to read the call numbers on the spine labels and return their books to the proper shelf so that others can find it.
