FALL 2008

The 2008-2009 school year is off to a great start.  I am very excited to experiment, create amazing projects, and produce new ideas with such an enthusiastic group of students.  These students are challenged every time we meet intellectually and creatively.  They have been challenged to think in new ways, process, and retain new information.

We are continually discovering new ideas.  We start by scratching the surface of a new and challenging topics and end with digging deep into the core of it.  The students are reminded to think outside the box and brainstorm.  I always remind them to thank their brain for all the hard work.  We like to think of our class as a physical workout for our brain.  It is important to stay healthy but definitely challenging.  I truly love working with children and this experience is extremely rewarding.  I urge you to check back throughout the school year to see what is happening in the Gifted and Talented classes.

Second Grade

Second Grade G & T students have written and illustrated their own books.  Their book was titled, The Important Book, after the real story by, Margaret Wise Brown.  We read her version and they were able to write their own version with their own views.  They continue to work on challenging spatial and math problems as well.

Third Grade

Third grade has become biologists and hydrologists in less than a month.  We have compared and contrasted living things vs. non-living things.  We have studied water and its importance.  They have created water cycle diagrams and learned about its three part process.  We will continue to study living things, weather, and the world around us.

                         Fourth Grade

Fourth Grade has identified over 100 rocks and minerals.  They have also studied natural resources in depth.  They have researched environmentally friendly ways to produce energy such as solar energy and wind energy.  They put on a play about wind energy titled, Harry Spotter and the Chamber of Windy Myths.   They are now identifying 44 different land forms on a 3-D map.  They will also create their own landform map.  Fourth grade is doing a great job combining science with nature!

Fifth Grade

Fifth Grade took a deep look into the rainforest where they researched a specific animal species.  They wrote an informational page as if they were their animal.  They used real fur, feathers, tissue paper, tooth picks, etc. to add texture to their projects.  They created 3-D replicas of the layers of the rainforest that are displayed in each glass case in every school.    We also had an amazing rainforest fruit salad party.  Students brought in different types of fruits that come from the rainforest like mango, papaya, coconut and so much more.
