January 2009

Dear Parents/Students,

First and foremost, may I wish each and every one of you the happiest of new years! My wishes for 2009 for all of our Sixteenth Avenue families are for good health, a peaceful and secure world, and the love and closeness of friends and relatives. As I write this message, the holidays are behind us, but never forgotten. I hope that you all had a wonderful break, scrumptious food, plenty of cozy and enjoyable family events, and the energy to do it all! As I enter my fifth year as principal of Sixteenth Avenue School I have to say to myself what I so frequently say to you – “the years just fly by” – each one faster than the last! My first class of fifth graders from the fall of 2004 are in their first year of high school (Grade 9) and even my first little group of Kindergarteners are already well into the swing of things here in the main building for fourth grade! I continue to love my job and being here with my wonderful students, supportive parents, and first-rate staff.

We continue to enjoy the warm winter weather and have the students go outside for recess whenever possible. Therefore, to help us with that goal, please be sure that you dress your youngsters in warm clothing, preferably removable “Layers,” so that they will be comfortable in classrooms where the temperatures are very high or somewhat lower.  Students feel more comfortable with sweaters and long sleeve shirts than wearing a bulky coat in class.  Please also reinforce at home the idea of putting on a sweater when feeling chilly. Naturally, the district is committed to providing a comfortable and healthy indoor environment for our students and staff, but we do need to all work together to try to make each child responsible for their own comfort level.  Remember, whatever children wear to school – that’s what the children will wear for recess. *Please also remember that there is no supervision for students until 8:30 a.m.      Many students arrive too early at school!

Also, don’t forget to check the calendar for all of our upcoming events and activities. Stay safe, warm, and healthy! Thank you again for all the thoughtful and generous things you do for me and the entire Sixteenth Avenue School staff!  May 2009 be filled with peace, prosperity, and happiness for all of us!

Happy New Year,

SIXTEENTH Avenue Elementary School

SIXTEENTH Avenue Elementary School is a culturally diverse neighborhood school where a quality partnership exists between teachers, staff, and parents, all taking a personal interest in each and every student.  Future challenges can be seen in improvements to the school building and the ability to instruct an increasing student population.

sIXTEENTH Avenue Elementary School offers a comprehensive program to students in grades K-5.  Emphasis is placed on helping students attain, to the best of their ability, the highest scores in reading, mathematics and writing, along with social studies and science. The arts, physical development, health and student well-being are also addressed.  A world language program, grades K-5, is focused on Spanish.

SIXTEENTH Avenue teachers strive for continued professional advancement by participating in workshops, professional development conferences, graduate course work and serving on several district curriculum committees.  Through these efforts, the state’s core curriculum content standards are addressed.  Special programs exist for gifted and talented students, speech students and special education students.  An elementary guidance program provides individual and small group attention and has brought anti-drug, anti-violence and interpersonal skills programs to sIXTEENTH Avenue School.

SIXTEENTH Avenue SCHOOL has a very active and involved parent association.  Members work hard to raise monies for programs, which help complement the existing curriculum.  Parents serve on school, district and community committees, which help set goals and standards for student progress.

Computer education is an integral part of the daily program at sixteenth Avenue school.  Students work individually and in groups to improve their awareness of technology.

Teachers, parents and students at SIXTEENTH Avenue are excited with the educational direction in which we are moving.  We welcome the challenges, which are presented daily, and look forward to the challenges that will be forthcoming in the future.
